Theme: Five Senses (Part 2)ABC's: Letter Q
Math: Crescent Shape; AB Patterns
Nursery Rhyme: "Jack Be Nimble"
Theme Activities:
Be sure you have already completed Part 1 of the Five Senses activities in Week 5 (K for Kites).
Then, continue with these remaining senses:
1. Listening Walk:
Read this book about hearing:
Go on your own “Listening Walk”, either indoors or outdoors. A blindfold can be used to make it easier to focus on sounds. Talk about the sounds you hear along the way. At the end, draw pictures of some of the things you heard and try to re-create their sounds.
2. Sense of Hearing Activity
“Mystery Cans”- Fill small containers (film canisters, Play-Doh cans, or oatmeal tins) with various items. Have the child shake the container to guess what is inside based solely on the sound it makes. (Examples: birdseed, beans, marshmallows, rice, pennies, rocks) You could also fill 2 containers with the same object and have the child guess which 2 are matches.
3. Five Senses Book: Sense of Hearing
Create Page 3 of your Five Senses Book. Caption the page “My ears help me hear sounds.” Use the pictures from this “Name That Sound” Game or pictures from magazines that illustrate objects that make a distinct sound.
4. Read some more books about the five senses.
6. Five Senses Book: Sense of Smell
Create Page 4 of your Five Senses Book. Caption the page “My nose helps me smell things.” Paint and decorate a coffee filter flower. When it is dry spray it with perfume.
7. Sense of Taste Activity
Learn about the different taste buds with this Taste Areas activity. Some food ideas: cocoa powder (bitter), chips (salty), lemons (sour), candy bar (sweet).
8. Five Senses Book: Sense of Taste
Create page 5 of your Five Senses Book. Cut pictures
from magazines or a grocery store flyer of foods that you think taste good.
Caption the page “My tongue helps me taste things and choose what to eat.”
9. Review the Five Senses
Play the Five
Senses sorting game to review all five senses.

2. Clip-A-Rhyme Cards:
Practice rhyming words with the "Clip-a-Rhyme" Cards on Page 16 & 17 of Part 1 of This Reading Mama's Rhyme Time Pack. Laminate & cut the strips apart. Remind child what "rhyming" words are and how they sound the same at the end of the word. Show child how to clip a clothespin onto the picture of the word in each row that rhymes with the picture in the first box.
3. Letter Q Introduction:
Review Letter C, D & K. Add the letter Q. Use Foam Letter Builders to build the letter. Show a collection of several items that begin with Q: quilt, quarter, queen...
Print the Letter Q Words from Raising Rock Stars to add to your collection of cards. Practice sorting the words by their first letter sound, or show a word and have child call out what letter it starts with.
4. Letter Q Words
Using the Letter Q Template (scroll down to bottom), help your child cut out pictures of words that begin with Q from the Learning the Alphabet: Letter Q Pack and paste them onto the Q's. Talk about each word, emphasizing the "Qu" sound at the beginning. Add to your Alphabet Notebook.
