Astronomy Lesson 20: The Planets, Part 1

Activity 1: The Planets in Order

1: Learn a mnemonic device to remember the order of the planets:
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos

3. Use fruits to represent the different planets. Practice putting them in order.






 

Sun = grapefruit
Mercury = yellow Skittle
Venus = cherry
Earth = kiwi slice
Mars = strawberry
Jupiter = plum w/ strawberry red spot
Saturn = lemon w/ lemon peel ring
Uranus = large marshmallow
Neptune = banana slice
Pluto = mini marshmallow


Activity 2: Planet Distances

Use this outdoor activity to model the relative scale (distance apart) of the planets and their orbits.

Supplies Needed:
- softball, marbles, peppercorns & sand to represent the planets
- bright colored card stock with each planet representation attached
- 9 3 ft. dowels to attach to the planet cards
- copies of the handout from the website

Activity 3: Learn about Mercury


1. Read the facts about Mercury from KidsAstronomy.com

2. Watch a video about Mercury:



3. Read a book from the book list about Mercury.

4. Complete a Planet Mini Report about Mercury (for strong writers) OR color the picture of Mercury.

5. Color the cut-out of the sun, and the planet Mercury. Tape them to the wall in relative proportion to one another. Add additional planets as you study each.


Activity 4: Learn about Venus

1. Read the facts about Venus from KidsAstronomy.com.

2. Watch a video about Venus.


3. Read a book from the book list about Venus.

4. Complete your Planet Mini Report or color the picture of Venus.

5. Add Venus to your wall diagram of the Solar System.



Activity 5: Learn about Earth


1. Read the facts about Earth from KidsAstronomy.com.

2. See a video of what Earth looks like from space:



3. Complete your Planet Mini Report about earth or color its picture.

4. Add Earth to your wall diagram of the solar system.
