K4 Week 8: L for Leaves

New Concepts:

Theme: Fall
ABC's: Letter L
Math: Introducing #2; Calendar Skills

Calendar Time Notebook:

This week we will begin using a Calendar Time Notebook. Each day as you start school work, you will work with your child to learn basic calendar skills. The Notebook also serves as a tool to review numbers, letters, and shapes you have already learned. It may help to have a large wall calendar handy when doing Calendar Time together, so you can have another visual aid.

Preschool Calendar 2014-2015: Days of the Week, Months of the Year, Weather, Feelings, and More
For the Calendar Notebook:
You will need a regular 1/2" or 1" 3-ring binder and some sheet protectors. Put each page into a sheet protector and provide child with a dry-erase marker so that the pages can be used all week long for extra practice and review. You will have to work on the Calendar portion together, but the number and letter pages could be done independently.

Theme Activities:

1. Review the seasons.
Go back over the activities you did last week, asking child to recall each of the seasons.

Here is a fun video about the seasons:

2. Learn the Days of the Week
Begin to work on memorizing the Days of the Week. Show them on the calendar. Talk about what you do each day of the week.
Here is a fun song. Sing it often!

3. Read a book about Fall.

Fall (Four Seasons Series)  We're Going on a Leaf Hunt  Why Do Leaves Change Color? (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2)  Leaf Man   It's Fall (Celebrate the Seasons! (Paperback))

4. Color a picture about fall.
Choose one of these pictures to color while you talk about the different things you may see in the season of Fall, what the weather is like, and what you might wear.

5. Go on a Fall Scavenger Hunt.
Give your child a clipboard with this Scavenger Hunt printed out. Help her to find each of the items on the list as you go on a nature hike outdoors. Collect a few small natural items, such as leaves or pine needles in a small bag as you go. (You will need some for crafts later!)

6. Make a leaf person.

ABC & Handwriting Activities

1. Letter L Introduction
Review letters K, Q, and A. Show letter "L" Flashcard. Build with Foam Letter Builders. Go on a hunt around the room to find words that begin with L (lamp, Lego, legs, lips, lunch, log).
