Learn to Read, Unit 1: Short Vowels

 

Week 1: Short A Vowel

1. Use these Short Vowel Cards to make a poster of words that begin with the short A sound. Color a picture of the letter A with pictures that begin with its sound.

2. Listen to the “Letter A Song” on YouTube.

3. Use Stretchy the Word Snake and letter magnets to introduce CVC words in the –am Word Family: dam, ham, jam, Sam, yam, & ram.

4. Introduce Sight Words “the,” “end” & “and” with my Sight Words Unit 1. Cut out the puzzles and have child put them together. Print the flashcards on cardstock. Allow child to color them and post them on the wall. Cut out the circles with trace-able words and have child paste into his Reading Notebook.

5. Introduce –at Word Family using these Pocket Chart cards with pictures: bat, rat, fat, mat, sat, cat & hat.

6. Read BOB Books, Set 1, Book 1! You can read a whole book!

7. Introduce –ap Word Family using letter magnets or tiles: cap, lap, map, nap, tap & rap.

8. Use the “Word Family Cans” activity to introduce the –ad Word Family: bad, dad, had, lad, mad, pad, sad & Tad.

9. Read BOB Books, Set 1, Book 2!

10. Use Scrabble tiles or letter magnets to build words in the –an Word Family: fan, man, van, can, ran, tan & ban.

11. Cut out and have child sort & paste the short vowel A words into his/ her Reading Notebook into the correct Word Family Flower based on their ending.

12. Play the “Short Vowel A” Board game with a dice and counters of your choice to review the Short Vowel A Words.

 

Week 2: Short E Vowel

1. Use these Short Vowel Cards to make a poster of words that begin with the short E sound. Color a picture of the letter E with pictures that begin with its sound.

2. Watch the “3-Letter Words with e” Video on YouTube.

3. Introduce the –ed & –et Word Families using the Read & Stick Mat.

4. Introduce Sight Words “I” & “me” using the coloring flashcards and then paste the trace-able circles into the child’s Reading Notebook.

5. Color, cut & paste a Mini Picture Book for the –en Word Family.

6. Cut out and have child sort & paste the short vowel E words into his/ her Reading Notebook into the correct Word Family Flower based on their ending.

7. Play the “Short Vowel E” Board game to review the Short Vowel E words.

 

Week 3: Short I Vowel

1. Use these Short Vowel Cards to make a poster of words that begin with the Short I sound. Color a picture of the letter I with pictures that begin with its sound.

2. Watch the “Letter I Song” Video on YouTube.

3. Use Stretchy the Word Snake and Scrabble tiles to introduce the –in & –it Word Families.

4. Add Sight Words “is,” “his,”, “as”, “has,” & “a” to your Word Wall and Reading Notebook. Practice building the puzzles with Sight Words. Review all Sight Words with the Cup Crash Game.

5. Use Dot Marker Worksheets to practice sight words.

6. Introduce the –ib, –ix, & –ig Word Families using a Paint Chip Word Family Sliders game.

7. Play the “Short I Flashcard Game”. (You may want to remove the words with double consonants or 4 letters.)

7. Cut out and have child sort & paste the short vowel I words into his/ her Reading Notebook into the correct Word Family Flower based on their ending.

 

Week 4: Short O Vowel

1. Use these Short Vowel Cards to make a poster of words that begin with the Short O sound. Color a picture of the letter O with pictures that begin with its sound.

2. Watch the “O Song” Video on YouTube.

3. Sort the –ot & –og Word Families using the Pocket Chart pictures & words. Play the Hot Dog Word Sort Game.

4. Introduce remaining Unit 1 Sight Words “on,” & “of” using Coloring Flashcards, Puzzles, and trace-able circles for Reading Notebook.

5. Read Bob Books, Set 1, Book 3!

6. Use Scrabble tiles or letter magnets to introduce –op & –ox Word Families.

7. Cut out and have child sort & paste the short vowel O words into his/ her Reading Notebook into the correct Word Family Flower based on their ending.

8. Read Bob Books, Set 1, Book 4!


Week 5: Short U Vowel

1. Use these Short Vowel Cards to make a poster of words that begin with the Short U sound. Color a picture of the letter U with pictures that begin with its sound.

2. Watch the “Letter U Song” video on YouTube.

3. Use Scrabble tiles or letter magnets to introduce the –ut & –ub Word Families.

4. Read Bob Books, Set 1, Book 5.

5. Sort the –ug Word Family using the Pocket Chart Activities.

6. Introduce the –un & –um Word Families using Scrabble tiles or letter magnets.

7. Cut out and have child sort & paste the short vowel U words into his/ her Reading Notebook into the correct Word Family Flower based on their ending.

8. Read Bob Books, Set 1, Book 6.

 

Week 6: Review Short Vowels

1. Use alphabet stamps to fill in the correct short vowel sound on this worksheet.

2. Use Scrabble tiles or letter magnets to spell the words on these 3-Letter Word Cards.

3. Make your own foam dice by writing letters on foam blocks from the Dollar Store. Roll 2 consonant letters & 1 vowel. Arrange them on these Roll-a-Word Mats to make 3-letter words.

4. Play the Bugs on a Rug Rhyming Game.

5. Review the short vowels with this game on KizPhonics.com.

6. Read the remainder of the Bob Books, Set 1.

7. Use these Short Vowel Sorting Pictures to practice sorting vowel sounds.
