Click any of the links above to find a Unit Study that I've designed (and usually tried with my own kids) just for homeschool families like you! This is a work in progress, so none of the units are completely finished, but hopefully you can find something you can use with your own family!

Activity 1: Demonstrate earth's layers with an apple.

There are four layers of the earth. We can use an apple as a visual demonstration (cut it in half so you can see all the layers).

No matter where you stand, there are about 8,000 miles of earth beneath your feet and almost all of it is rock. There are four layers of earth.

Outer Layer = Crust- The crust is as thin as the skin of the apple. It is cool, unlike the inside layers of the Earth. It is made mostly of rock. Under the continents, the crust is up to 25 miles thick. Under the ocean, it is about 3 miles thick.

Mantle- Below the crust is a layer of hot, heavy rock about 1,800 miles thick. (The crust & the upper part of the mantle are called the lithosphere.) It is so hot in some places that the mantle rock isn't quite solid. It's thick and flexible like Silly putty. This is like the middle flesh of the apple.

Outer Core- The third layer, which is like the core of the apple, is made mostly of liquid iron and nickel. The entire outer core is melted. The temperature is 5,500 to 7,200 degrees and the thickness is 1,410 miles.

Inner Core- The very center of the Earth is a ball of solid iron nearly 800 miles thick. The coolest part is 6,000 degrees and the hottest part is nearly 12,000 degrees-- hotter than the surface of the sun! It is mostly made of solid iron & nickel. This layer is like the seeds of the apple.

Activity 1: Review the layers of the earth.

Layers of the Earth Nomenclature Cards
These can be used during the demonstration as a visual reminder of the name of each layer. Later you can cut them apart and have the student match the word to the picture as a "quiz."

Activity 2: Eat through the earth's layers.

Activity 4: Pangea Puzzle

Use this Puzzle from the American Museum of Natural History to learn about pangea, the supercontinent.
