Red: small rectangle, large rectangle, small circle, large circle
Yellow: small rectangle, large rectangle, small circle, large circle
Blue: small rectangle, large rectangle, small circle, large circle
Step 2:
Then have your child name each shape. Ask how they would sort them. (Allow them to answer either color or shape or size.) Sort them by that attribute, then ask another way they can sort them. Sort all 3 ways.
Step 3:
Show how to make a basic “graph” or “chart” using the shape pieces. In the first row, have child help you put the pieces in the following order:
small red rectangle… large red rectangle… small red circle… large red circle (Try to use the words 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th when placing them on the table)
Now tell him you want to make another row with the yellow pieces. Repeat the pattern with yellow, placing each piece beneath its matching red shape.
Repeat with the blue shapes, having child help place each shape in its proper “column.”
Point out the similarities of the shapes in each column going up & down, as well as those in each row.
