K4 Week 11: M for Monsters


New Concepts:

Theme: Healthy Eating
ABC's: Letter M
Math: Introducing #5; Matching # Sets 1-5

Calendar Time Notebook:

See full instructions for creating your Calendar Time Notebook in Week 8. Continue to color one square each day on your calendar. Fill in the weather, day of the week, etc. Practice memorizing the days of the week. This week begin to work on memorizing your phone number. Also add in a daily weather graph, using your new graphing skills!

Theme Activities:



1. Learn about taking care of your teeth.

Review the Healthy Habits you talked about last week. Another thing we need to do to stay healthy is take care of our teeth. Practice pretending you're a dentist. Talk about the things we do to keep our teeth healthy.

Print this Tooth Template and have your child "practice" brushing her teeth by painting the tooth white with an old toothbrush. (This blog post also has a fun Dentist coloring page.)





2. Make an apple teeth snack.

3. Read some books about healthy eating.
Eating healthy is another way we take care of our bodies.

4. Talk about the food groups.



Color this picture of the foods that belong in each group.

Cut out pictures of food from grocery store flyers and sort them in large circles on the floor, or on separate pieces of paper, based on which food group they belong to.


5. Talk about each type of food.

Here is a set of worksheets that has pictures of food for each food group. Help your child learn sorting by going through each page.

6. Eat healthy all week!

Track your child's food habits with this Five Food Groups tracking chart. Just color the foods each day as they eat a food from each food group on the chart.

2. Read a book about monsters and/ or Halloween.

Letter M "ABC-Find-It!" Cards
Cut out the M Words Image Cards and hide them in a bucket of rice or other sensory bin. Have child fish them out using tongs or tweezers and match them to the Poster.

Math Activities:


1. #5 Introduction
- Review #3 & #4. Show #5 Poster with Rhyme.
- Add 5 stickers to the #5 Template. Add to your Numbers Book.

2. Match Numbers with a Set of Pictures
Use flashcards for #'s 1-5. Set them out on the ground. Have child use teddy bear counters or some other manipulative to count out the correct number of items they need to make that number.
Then, get some more practice by drawing lines to match on this worksheet:
"Matching Number & Picture 1-20"


3. Monster Math
Get some more practice matching numbers with picture sets with this Monster-themed activity. Glue the correct number of googly eyes onto the "Happy Monster Monster Eyes 123".




4. Review the color GRAY.
- Review previous colors we have covered.
- Go on a hunt for things in the room that are gray.
- Color this picture of Things That Are Gray.

1. Give an overview of ways we take care of our body.

Me and My Amazing Body

Inside Your Outside: All About the Human Body (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library)

Use this color, cut & paste worksheet as a guide:
Take a bath.
Wash your hands.
Get good rest.
Exercise daily.
Brush your teeth.
Eat healthy foods.

Then color the healthy things on the "Healthy Hunt" Handout (pg. 17 of the document, listed as pg. 84) under "Part 3: Every Day is a Healthy Day".


2. Learn about germs & good hand-washing techniques.
Read a book about germs.

This site has a great lesson for teaching about germs using glitter. Teach child how to sing the Hand Washing Song when washing his/ her hands:

(to the tune of: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")

Wash, wash, wash your hands
Play our handy game.
Rub and scrub, scrub and rub.
Germs go down the drain! (Repeat)


3. Learn about the importance of exercise.


The Busy Body Book: A Kid's Guide to Fitness  My Amazing Body: A First Look at Health and Fitness (First Look at...Series)


The Sesame Street Healthy Habits Kit (Part 1) has a dice the child can roll that will give them a different exercise to try. See instructions on pg. 14-16.






4. Learn about the importance of getting good sleep.

Sleep Is for Everyone (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1)

Here is a lesson plan about the importance of sleep.
Allow child to draw or paint a picture of her bedroom and the things that help her get good sleep.


5. Healthy Habits Chart
Create a chart of all the things the child wants to do throughout the week to stay healthy. Give them a sticker on the chart each day they do the tasks.

There's also a poster with hand-washing instructions at this website.


6. Learn about people who help us stay healthy.

Read a book about doctors and talk about how they help us to stay well or to get better when we are sick. Talk about a recent visit to the doctor. This post has some great links to sites with different printable forms to play pretend doctor.

5. Write the letter X.
Use different items you can find around the house to make the letter X. (ex: popsicle sticks, straws, knives, pipe cleaners, pencils, etc.)
Then practice writing the letter X with activities from Part 2 of the Letter X Pack.

1. #4 Introduction

2. Introduce Sorting & Graphing

Play this Shape Sorting & Graphing Game:

Step 1: Use construction paper to cut out the following before you start:
Red: small rectangle, large rectangle, small circle, large circle
Yellow: small rectangle, large rectangle, small circle, large circle
Blue: small rectangle, large rectangle, small circle, large circle

Step 2:
Then have your child name each shape. Ask how they would sort them. (Allow them to answer either color or shape or size.) Sort them by that attribute, then ask another way they can sort them. Sort all 3 ways.

Step 3:
Show how to make a basic “graph” or “chart” using the shape pieces. In the first row, have child help you put the pieces in the following order:
small red rectangle… large red rectangle… small red circle… large red circle (Try to use the words 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th when placing them on the table)
Now tell him you want to make another row with the yellow pieces. Repeat the pattern with yellow, placing each piece beneath its matching red shape.
Repeat with the blue shapes, having child help place each shape in its proper “column.”
Point out the similarities of the shapes in each column going up & down, as well as those in each row.

3. Practice Graphing with Snacks

Use this Fruit Loops Graph to practice your new graphing skills.

4. Review the color BLACK.
Review the previous colors we have done: brown, purple, red, orange.
Show the "black" flashcard. Go on a hunt around the room for things that are black.
Color this coloring page of things that are BLACK.

5. Roll & Graph "My Body"

Have some more practice with graphing using a dice that features different body parts, to go along with this week's theme.
